The woman had placed her backpack under the seat in front of her, but upon landing, she was shocked to find it soaked.
The woman claimed the airline told her there was nothing they could do.
A woman had a disturbing experience on a Frontier Airlines flight from Seattle to Dallas on June 9, when she discovered her backpack was soaked in urine during the journey. To make matters worse, the airline reportedly told her there was nothing they could do. The incident gained attention after her sister shared the story on Reddit.
The post was titled, “My sister’s backpack was soaked with pee on her Frontier flight and the airline says there’s nothing they can do except she herself confront the passenger… Is she really just stuck with this biohazard?”
According to the post, the woman had placed her backpack under the seat in front of her. When the flight ended and she reached to grab it, she noticed it was wet. Thinking it might be just water or soda, she went to the airplane bathroom to dry it. But the paper towels turned yellow.
“She’s 99% sure the person sitting in the seat in front of her peed during the flight and it leaked onto her backpack,” the post read.
She rushed to report it after deplaning. But instead of helping, the airport staff “brushed her off.” They asked her to go to the ticket counter, where she was then sent to the supervisor, all while holding “pee-soaked paper towels as evidence.”
A manager told her they had to call the general manager because “nothing like this has happened before.” But in the end, Frontier said there was nothing they could do. She was told she would have to “settle it with the passenger.”
“Which is ridiculous, because who in their right mind is going to confront someone, but also confront someone about an unknown bodily fluids???” her sister wrote.
“This whole thing just feels… so gross and wrong. A bodily fluid soaks her personal belongings, and she’s being told she’s on her own?” she added.
At the end of the post, her sister asked for help from the online community. She wanted to know if the matter could be taken further, maybe even reported to the Department of Transportation (DOT). “Or is she really just on her own dealing with this biohazard?” she asked.
Take a look at the post:
The post gained significant attention with users in the comment section pointing out that the airline may not be at fault.
One user commented, “I’m scratching my head wondering how Frontier is responsible for a passenger peeing on another passenger’s bag.”
Another said, “The contract of carriage explicitly says they aren’t, so not much head scratching to be done.”
“Why would this be Frontier’s problem? They didn’t piss on her bag…. She should confront the person and ask for compensation of some kind. The issue is between her and the other passenger, no one else. Frontier cannot control the bodily functions of others, be logical about this. There literally isn’t a single thing they can do to stop someone from pissing when seated,” someone said.
As for the airline’s official stance, Frontier’s website clearly states, “Frontier will not be liable for loss or damage to carry-on baggage unless such damage is caused by Frontier’s or its agent’s negligence.” This does not include things like turbulence, movement of items during the flight, or normal handling of luggage, including placing it under the seat or in the overhead bin.
