The internet is full of success stories of individuals who left their 9-to-5 jobs to pursue entrepreneurial ventures and have achieved significant financial success, earning crores through their startups. These stories often highlight the drive to pursue passions and build something meaningful, alongside the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. But here’s the reality check, not all startups have fairytale endings. Recently, in a heartfelt note, a former Indian startup founder revealed the upsetting reality of transitioning from starting a business to struggling to land a job.
In a Reddit post, a user recently shared that he was once a founder of a healthy food and beverage application but is now in desperate search of a job. He wrote, “We managed all aspects of the business ourselves, including marketing, customer support, operations, finance, compliance, and content, just like any other start-up. We were bootstrapped, learned everything on the fly, and kept it going as long as we could.”
The start-up idea saw a significant setback as, without external funding, his partner stepped away from the project, leaving him to shut the shop and enter the job market.
Following the shutdown, he is now looking for a job and has given numerous interviews in the past few months only to hear repetitive responses like “We’re looking for someone with more specific experience. I’m not sure if you’re right for this, We’re not sure how to fit your background into this role” (C) ‘You’ve done a lot but not quite what we’re looking for’ (D) ‘You have something interesting going on and this role wouldn’t suit you. You’re overqualified.”
He further noted that he was not looking for niche roles and was open to adapting, but he was still in a dilemma because he did not fit perfectly into any one position.
“I’m just floating in the middle, asking friends and network connections for help and wondering if I’m asking too much by simply wanting a chance. This is not a rant. And I am not here to be blamed. Because, honestly, this part of the founder’s story is rarely discussed. Sometimes it simply ends. Quietly,” he added.
