Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid out an ambitious vision for Bihar ahead of its crucial Assembly elections later this year. Sitharaman, wearing a sari presented by Bihar’s Padma awardee Dulari Devi, delivered the Budget on Saturday, outlining key announcements to boost the state’s growth in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and emerging sectors. The announcements sparked a lively online discussion, with memes quickly circulating in response to Bihar’s prominent mention.
A standout proposal is the greenfield airport initiative, which will introduce new airports to meet Bihar’s expanding aviation demands. Alongside this, the expansion of Patna Airport will improve connectivity and stimulate economic activity across the state.
In agriculture, the government will fund the Kosi Canal Project in Mithilanchal to enhance irrigation and water management, boosting local farming productivity.
Bihar’s status as the world’s largest producer of makhana (fox nuts) got a major boost with the creation of a Makhana Board. This new body will help Makhana farmers access central government schemes, improve value addition, and increase global recognition. Sitharaman said that the board would collaborate with Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs) and provide training to elevate agricultural practices.
On the education front, IIT Patna will undergo a major infrastructure expansion. This is part of a nationwide plan to increase the intake of around 6,500 students across five IITs.
Nirmala Sitharaman also announced the establishment of the National Institute of Food Technology in the state. The institute will focus on entrepreneurship, research, and development.
These announcements have brought forth a lot of reactions, with memes spreading on social media.
