Only a few Indians are listed in a recent Forbes report on billionaire immigrants who began their careers in the United States on an H-1B visa. Nevertheless, the report did mention Raj Sardana (founder and CEO of Innova Solutions), a man who moved to the US to pursue higher education, began working on a visa, and finally created a firm that has allowed him to become a millionaire today.
Who Is Raj Sardana?
The founder and CEO of Innova Solutions is Rajiv “Raj” Sardana. He was born in Delhi in 1960 and became a billionaire despite coming from modest circumstances.
During the 1947 partition, Raj Sardana’s parents, who were Punjabi, moved to India. “My brother and I, along with our parents, lived for 20 years in dilapidated government housing in New Delhi with no heating or air conditioning, no refrigerator, no phone, no TV, and no automobile,” in an interview with Authority Magazine last year, Raj Sardana stated.
“Despite our humble beginnings, my parents instilled the values of relentless hard work and found a way to provide quality education to me and my brother,” Raj Sardana added.
According to Forbes, Raj Sardana relocated to the United States in 1981 to join Georgia Tech and obtain a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He claims that he had “maybe a hundred dollars” in his pocket when he moved to the US from India. To help him pay for his education, Sardana accepted a job in the cafeteria.
“I started my life from scratch here. I got a job at the cafeteria of Georgia Tech and supported myself through college,” Raj Sardana told Authority Magazine. He obtained an H-1 visa to work for Howmet Aerospace after graduating.
The H-1B visa, which permits skilled individuals to reside and work lawfully in the United States, was derived from the H-1 visa.
At Teledyne CAE, a company that manufactured engines for Tomahawk Missiles, Raj Sardana had a distinguished engineering post in 1987. On the other hand, this division was closed in 1990 after the Cold War ended and the United States and Russia agreed to stop producing new missiles. Sardana’s job was thus lost.
“I had just bought a house with a mortgage, had a six-month-old daughter, and my parents were also living with me. At that moment, I had no income to support my family. Somehow, I gathered enough courage to decide I would not work for corporate America anymore,” Raj Sardana said as quoted by Authority magazine.
Raj Sardana then began his entrepreneurial career with the $25,000 (about Rs 21 lakh) he had saved. His small company expanded to become Innova Solutions ten years later.
Raj Sardana, the CEO of the IT services company, is worth an incredible $2 billion, and the company currently employs over 50,000 people worldwide.
