Former US Vice President Kamala Harris may have skipped the 97th Academy Awards, but she was all set for a cozy Oscars night at home. Her husband, former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a candid snapshot of Harris pouring Doritos into a bowl, seemingly gearing up to watch the show with her family. The former VP was caught in a relaxed, off-duty moment.
“Oscars watch party prep,” Doug Emhoff captioned the post.
Social media users quickly reacted to the post. One commented, “Wow, Kamala looks almost unrecognizable—and genuinely happy for once, not just cackle-happy. Must be a huge relief to have that weight off her shoulders.” Another joked, “If I ever posted a picture of my wife like this, I’d be apartment hunting in no time. Doug, we need to talk—you missed some lessons.”
“One thing about Kamala, she WILL have a bag of Doritos for all occasions,” a comment read. A user loved the couple’s plan for the Oscars and added, “The Oscars should be watched this way, with a snack.”
The picture surfaced just an hour before the Oscars began. Earlier, a Deadline report confirmed Kamala Harris’ absence, noting that she was initially expected to attend. The report mentioned heightened security measures around the Dolby Theatre, fueling speculation about her presence. However, a last-minute decision in the afternoon led to her skipping the event. Security remained tight, with LAPD, federal law enforcement, and additional forces shutting down Hollywood. “All vehicles have to let the dogs in,” an officer reportedly said at the gate after a convoy of black mini-buses arrived with more private security and K-9 units.
“We live in a new, evolving security environment. The expected attendance of the former vice president is a major factor in the added security,” a federal official told Deadline.
With the red carpet laid out, the much-awaited Oscars 2025 has commenced with earlier winners already announced. Conan O’Brien has turned up as the first-time host while the show began with a special tribute to Los Angeles after surviving the deadly wildfires last month.
