During his discussion with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, people across the internet were puzzled and struggling to understand what on Earth he was talking about.

While speaking with the President of the United Arab Emirates, he said, “We have a term — ‘groceries.’ It’s an old term, but it means the things you’re buying — food. It’s pretty accurate, even if it sounds a bit outdated. But groceries are down.” His offbeat explanation sparked a wave of confusion and commentary online, with people unsure whether he was being nostalgic or simply unclear.

Many commenters suggested that the term only feels outdated to Trump because it’s likely been decades since he stepped foot in a supermarket.

“But groceries are down, costs are down. Eggs are down. The first week, they were hitting me with eggs and were up 200 per cent. And now they’re down to an amazing number. We’re down 97 per cent, 98 per cent from where they were,” he said as quoted by Pubity.
Many people were quick to challenge Trump’s math, pointing out that if his claims were taken literally, it would suggest that eggs now cost just 10 to 15 cents per dozen—something unrealistic. According to a CNN data analysis, egg prices have indeed dropped, but by approximately 52 per cent, not to the extreme level implied by Trump’s statement.
Critics also noted that this wasn’t the first time he made such a remark—he had shared similar comments back in April, drawing similar scepticism then as well.
