Erika claimed that the “strong smell” was not there in the flat when she toured it before shifting.
Erika was accused of being racist.
A woman from Florida stirred an online debate after she blamed her neighbour for cooking Indian food that has allegedly led to a persistent odour in her new apartment. Erika B, a lifestyle content creator, asked her social media followers to help her with a solution. She recently shifted to a new flat in Tampa, Florida, US. After spending a few days there, Erika found a strong smell spread in every nook and corner of her house. She later realised the source to be her neighbour’s cooking. Despite keeping an air purifier on throughout the day, Erika was unable to get rid of the situation.
“My new apartment smells. It didn’t when I toured it. I am assuming I have a neighbour who likes to cook curry, and it’s somehow leaking through the vents. I love Indian food, but this is too much,” she wrote on Thread.
Erika went on to explain her problem, saying, “It smelled nice in here for a day after I had a housekeeper here, and now it stinks again. We had the doors open for hours yesterday when the movers were here. I have plug-ins, and I have an air purifier running. I don’t know what else to do— it’s seeping into everything.”
After her post surfaced on the Meta platform, many users offered suggestions to Erika. One of them said, “Curry doesn’t stink. Maybe a dead rat/raccoon rotting somewhere in there. Call maintenance.” Another person asked Erika to convey her issues to the landlord.
“Maybe the maintenance can do something about the ventilation and filters. Until then, mix apple, orange and cinnamon in hot water on low to medium heat on the stove and use it as a temporary solution,” suggested a user.
Though Erika tried to defend herself by saying, ‘I love Indian food’, many of her followers accused her of racism. One said, “We cook Indian food every day and our house doesn’t smell or STINK as you mentioned in your rant. Cancel your lease and move out, as your complex has poor HVAC.”
Another woman came to the support of Erika and said, “Guys, it’s not racist to not want your entire house to smell like any food, no matter how cultural it is. I love Jamaican food, but I would not want my house smelling like ackee and saltfish 24/7.”
The Thread has gone widely viral, garnering many reactions and comments on the microblogging site.
