US-Colombia Relations: US President Donald Trump has ordered to send people living illegally in the country back to their country. In this episode, 2 flights from America left for Colombia. However, when the flight reached Colombia on Sunday (January 26), President Gustavo Petro did not allow American flights to land in the country, after which the Donald Trump administration retaliated by imposing strict sanctions and tariffs on Colombia. However, now Gustavo Petro has reversed his old decision and has issued orders for the American flight to arrive.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced imposition of 25 percent tariff after Colombia’s decision. Apart from this, the Trump administration also announced a travel ban and visa cancellation on Colombian citizens, which further increased the tension between the two countries. Trump gave the reason behind this action that Colombia had stopped US deportation flights and demanded improvement in the treatment of migrants.
President Petro arranged for an honorable return
To handle the situation, after Trump’s tariff threat, President Gustavo Petro has arranged for a special flight for the dignified return of Colombian citizens. “The Government of Colombia has made available the presidential aircraft to ensure the dignified return of those citizens,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday. Along with this, the Government of Colombia has also formed a team to ensure respectful treatment during the migration process. The government has set up a Unified Command Post (PMU), which will include various government departments, to follow appropriate protocols while treating deported Colombian citizens while respecting human rights.
Talks continue between America and Colombia
The Colombian government also said it would continue dialogue with the United States to ensure proper respect and rights in deportation procedures. “Colombia will continue active dialogue with the United States and seek an agreement that guarantees the dignified treatment of deported citizens,” the statement said.
Trump-Petro dispute on social media
Both the Presidents expressed their views on this issue on social media. President Petro wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he had “ordered the Minister of Foreign Trade to increase tariffs from the US by 25 percent.” Trump criticized Petro over deportation procedures and accused him of treating immigrants like criminals.
Tariff and migration dispute
This U-turn by Colombia and President Petro’s move to ensure the dignified return of Colombian citizens has temporarily resolved the ongoing tariff and migration dispute between the US and Colombia. However, the future of the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries still remains uncertain and it remains to be seen what further steps are taken as a result of this standoff.
