A woman from Hyderabad has sparked debate on social media after sharing a detailed Excel sheet of calculations of their friends’ expenses following a casual hangout. A student at the Indian School of Business posted the spreadsheet, created by her Chartered Accountant (CA) friend. The sheet not only calculated the percentage share for each person but also mentioned how much each individual owed. While many admired the precision, some questioned why they couldn’t use the Splitwise app. The individual who shared the post was amused by her CA friend’s hard work and shared their response behind going with the manual method.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the student wrote, “My friends here in B-School went outside yesterday and the CA in the group just sent this sheet with the split. Kinda love it.”

Sharing a screenshot of their chat where the individual suggested using the digital app instead of an Excel sheet, their CA friend replied, “Bro this hardly took me less than 5 minutes. In Splitwise, you have to visualize first, who has to pay for what, then enter the values and see between whom to divide. It would have taken double the time and effort in that. Plus chances of errors.”

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Interesting. The groups I’ve gone out within the recent past fight to pay the bill because we all are accumulating credit card points. Then the rest of the group pays them back thru UPI. We just split the whole amount.”

Another shared, “I had a group of friends do this once, never went out with them again.”

“This kind of split is very common, especially with groups that contain a mix of veg/non-veg people or people who drink/don’t drink. It’s only fair to split based on what you ate. Yes Splitwise exists, but it doesn’t let you add splits of this granularity,” a comment read.

An individual shared, “No offence, but among friends, you don’t track 2-2 rupees., it’s usually the final amount/number of persons. It’s better not to be friends with such people.”

One more added, “Forget friends, even my colleagues aren’t this cheap. We usually follow the same rule, irrespective of whoever eats what, the bill is always equally divided by number of people, as simple as that.”

Since the post was shared on X, it has garnered over six lakh views.
