India Bangladesh Relations: India has extended the visa of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She has been living in India since August 2023. This decision has been taken at a time when the demand for his return to Dhaka has intensified. 77-year-old Hasina left Bangladesh and took refuge in India amid nationwide protests and has since been living in a safe place in Delhi.
India has recently extended Sheikh Hasina’s visa to make her living in India easier. According to sources, Hasina’s visa has been extended by the Ministry of External Affairs and the consent of the Union Home Ministry was also included in it. However, officials clarified that India has not given asylum to Hasina, because there is no special law related to refugees in India.
Bangladesh sent note to India for the return of Sheikh Hasina
The interim government of Bangladesh had sent a note to the Indian government on 23 December for the return of Sheikh Hasina. In this note, different allegations were made against Hasina, on the basis of which Bangladesh had demanded her return from India. However, the Government of India has not yet given any official response in this matter, because the necessary formalities have not been completed by Dhaka.
Bangladesh recently canceled the passports of 97 people, including Sheikh Hasina. These individuals are accused of being involved in disappearances and killings during the protests in July. Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal issued an arrest warrant against Hasina on January 6, following which Hasina and 11 others were arrested and ordered to appear before the tribunal in February.
Bangladesh Commission plans to interrogate Sheikh Hasina
Major General (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman, head of the National Independent Investigation Commission of Bangladesh, recently said that the members of the commission want to go to India and interrogate Sheikh Hasina. This inquiry will be conducted as part of the investigation into the murder of 74 people by Bangladesh Rifles in 2009. However, the Government of India has not yet given any official information in this regard.
Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wajed Joy had in August denied rumors that his mother had applied for asylum in India or that her visa had been cancelled. India’s Foreign Ministry also commented on this matter and said that it depends on Sheikh Hasina what steps she takes in future. The ministry had said that India has no specific decision in this and it will completely depend on Hasina’s wishes.
