An NRI student who was raised in the US but relocated to India for higher education has ignited a heated debate online after sharing his candid review of his experience living in India. The student, currently studying for an undergraduate degree, took to Reddit to express his frustration with the country’s lack of civic sense, poor manners, and corrupt practices within the country. Comparing the behaviour of homeless people in the US to Indians, the user said that even those living on the streets in the US had better manners than Indians.
In his now-deleted Reddit post, the user wrote, “The country has no civic sense. I have been to ghettos and have met homeless people in the USA with better manners than many Indians.
The student further elaborated his observations, noting the intense competition they witnessed, writing, “The entire country seems to be in a perpetual rat race. No one takes the time to slow down and enjoy the small things in life. But this can be attributed to the massive population and horrible job market. I see kids just studying and studying, and for what?”
Despite India’s reported steady GDP growth, the students expressed disappointment with the poor and pathetic infrastructure and services, even within educational institutions.
Another significant point of criticism in the student’s post was corruption. “Corruption seems to be a way of life. I’ve met people who have condoned the practice and recommended I do the same. I truly don’t think this country will get anywhere with corruption. It also seems honesty and morals are frowned upon by everyone around me,” he added.
Concluding the post, the student urged the people of India to join in and change the nation for the better. The comparison post, particularly the one involving homeless individuals in the US, triggered a wave of angry responses from Indian users. A majority of people voiced their strong disapproval of the student’s remarks, criticising their perspective.
“It’s natural for people to have different perspectives on social issues, and this discussion can help raise awareness. The comparison to homeless people in the US is thought-provoking, but it’s also important to consider the unique challenges faced by people in India,” read a comment.
An account remarked, “Lol civic sense in homeless people in us?? They will rob and kill you if you give them a chance.”
“Comparing the US to India is like comparing apples to oranges. Compare a developing country to another developing country. Not trying to defend India, but this is just not a fair comparison,” said another.
Another added, “He got it right… But of course, he was in the north. To clarify, he must take a tour across India… India, culturally, is way more diverse than the US… But he still pinned things right (as per his current experiences).”
