With India leading by 281 runs at Tea on the third day of the fifth Test at the Oval, England will need to register a record chase when it comes out to bat in the fourth innings in its bid to clinch the series.
The Oval in London has historically been a tough venue for fourth-innings run chases, with a target in excess of 200 being overhauled only six times at the iconic ground.
The highest successful run chase at the venue was registered by England, back in 1902, when it overhauled a 263-run target with just one wicket in hand against archrival Australia.
Moreover, since the turn of the century, only one team has chased a target of more than 200 runs at The Oval. Sri Lanka had achieved the feat last year in September, chasing down a 219-run target against England.
India’s highest successful run chase at the venue is 173, which came back in 1971 against England.
