Debate On Assisted Dying Bill: British MPs on Friday (November 29, 2024) began a historic debate on a proposal to help seriously ill adults end their lives in England and Wales. Other countries that have legalized assisted suicide include Australia, Belgium, Canada, and parts of the United States, where rules on who is eligible vary by jurisdiction. More than 500 British people have ended their lives in Switzerland, where the law allows assisted death for non-residents.
Assisted suicide differs from euthanasia, which is permitted in the Netherlands and Canada, in which health care practitioners administer a lethal injection at the patient’s request under specific circumstances.
