Colossal Biosciences made a groundbreaking announcement recently— the dire wolf, a species that went extinct over 12,500 years ago, has been successfully revived. This achievement is being labelled as the “world’s first de-extinction.” The company revealed the birth of three dire wolf puppies who are named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi. These pups were created using ancient DNA combined with cutting-edge gene-editing technology which resulted in a hybrid species that closely resembles the extinct animal. Two male dire wolf pups were born on October 1, 2024, while a female pup was born on January 30 this year, according to Colossal Biosciences.

Dire wolf was much larger than the modern gray wolf as it had a wider head, thick fur and a strong jaw. It was a top predator in its time. The species became widely known after its appearance in the popular Game of Thrones series where the dire wolf played a significant role in the story. One of the revived cubs, Khaleesi, is named after one of the iconic characters from Game of Thrones.
The news of the revived dire wolves took the internet by storm. Time magazine featured a cover with an image of a white wolf and the word “Extinct” was crossed out. There was also a photo of the puppies sitting on the famous Iron Throne from Game of Thrones. These images created a huge buzz online.
Elon Musk reacted to the news by sharing the photos on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He then reshared the pictures where he humorously wrote, “Please make a miniature pet woolly mammoth (sic).”
Author George RR Martin, creator of Game of Thrones, also had an emotional reaction after meeting the puppies before the public reveal. In an interview with CBR, Colossal Biosciences co-founder Ben Lamm shared that Martin was moved to tears upon seeing the dire wolf puppies.
Lamm said, “I did fly George out to meet the wolves, and he cried! He completely cried. He said this was like one of the greatest things that he’s ever seen.”
The official X account of Jurassic World, a reboot of the original Jurassic Park that revolves around the chaos after the revival of dinosaurs, also responded to the news. In a playful tweet, the account wrote, “We see no possible way this could go wrong.”
According to CNN, Colossal Biosciences is also working toward resurrecting the mammoth, dodo and Tasmanian tiger since 2021.
