Netflix’s latest release, Adolescencecontinues to rule the streaming platform, delivering impressive viewership and now becoming one of the most popular English shows across the globe. The four-episode series focuses on a 13-year-old boy, Jamie Millerwho is accused of murdering his classmate, Katie. While the story begins with the arrest of the kid, the narrative takes a darker turn after Jamie’s inner conflicts and emotional turmoil are reflected. Amid a lot of rave reviews from fans, Adolescence has caught the attention of billionaire businessman Elon Musk, and the reaction is not very amusing.

A social media user named Ian Miles Cheong shared a detailed note on X, claiming that the Netflix show is based on real-life cases, such as the Southport murder. “They race-swapped the actual killer from a Black man/migrant to a white boy, and the story has it so he was radicalized online by the red pill movement. Just the absolute state of anti-white propaganda,” he added.

Seemingly nodding in agreement with the “anti-white propaganda” claim, Musk took to the comment section of the post and simply remarked, “Wow.”

However, social media users couldn’t help but reject the claims, offering various explanations in the comments. One wrote, “That show is not based on Southport. It tells a different story and explores different themes. It’s shameful to even make the link and use it to make the ridiculous point raised. Scraping the barrel with these comments,” while another added, “Adolescence was announced in March 2024. Filming began in July 2024. The Southport murders occurred in July 2024. The show creators have made it clear that Adolescence is not based on a single case. This tweet is a lie.”

“You didn’t see the show… It’s ok; it’s a good show; it’s fiction and not anti-white; the villain in the show is the corrosive impact of social media on young minds,” one of the comments echoed similar views.

On the other hand, the Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne also reacted to the suggestions about the drama being based on a real crime. Speaking on The News Agents podcast, Thorne said, “They’ve claimed that Stephen and I based it on a story and another story, so we race-swapped because we were basing it on here, and it ended up there and everything else. Nothing is further from the truth.” He also asserted that no single part of the show is based on a true story.

“We’re not making a point about race with this. We are making a point about masculinity. We’re trying to get inside a problem. We’re not saying this is one thing or another; we’re saying that this is about boys,” he continued.

Created by Thorne alongside Stephen Graham, Adolescence is now streaming on Netflix.
