With a gentle smile, Tara Devi recounts how she has been coming to the Kumbh every year since 1945. This year, her son was adamant about her not going. Seizing an opportunity when he went to buy vegetables, she stealthily left for the Kumbh without informing anyone. “I haven’t told anyone at home that I have come to take a bath in the Kumbh,” she confesses. “I only told my granddaughter about this. I will stay in Kumbh for a month.”
When asked about the absence of her family members, she explains, “My son worries a lot about me. He says, ‘Don’t go, you will get sick, you will fall, you will stumble.’ He also worries that I don’t eat outside.” However, when questioned about her family’s potential concern, the elderly woman confidently asserts, “They know that I will be safe.”
