Mumbai’s street food delicacy, vada pav, continues to amaze foodies not just in India but around the globe. A deep-fried potato fritter placed between a soft and hot bread roll, the vada pav served with spicy hot green chutney and fried green chillies has a lip-smacking effect on most. Offering a range of Indian flavours, the vada pav is becoming increasingly popular among tourists, as seen through the experience of Japanese influencer Koki Shishido.
In a video that caught the Internet’s attention, Shishido, a Hindi-speaking desi Japanese influencer, was seen relishing the Vada Pav after earlier disliking the Maharashtrian dish. Shishido explained how he didn’t enjoy the taste of the vada pav the first time he tried it. He added that the quintessential snack but has come to fall in love with it now. The clip starts with him entering the frame as a Japanese tourist and approaching the vada pav seller while dressed in his casuals.
“Hello brother, what is this?” the influencer asks the seller before the stall owner tells him “, Yeh vada pav hai (This is vada pav).” He then says, “Vada pav…? Let me try one. Thank you.” But Shishido didn’t take a liking to the tangy and spicy flavour of the combination of potato fritter inside the soft piece of bread and green chillies. He recalled in the clip that his first reaction to the vada pav was, “I don’t like it.”
After a year, however, his views on the king of Mumbai’s street food scene completely changed. Later during the clip, one can see Shishido dressed in an Indian ethnic attire and even interacting with the vada pav seller in Marathi. “Namaste, dada. Kasa kai (How are you)?” the influencer says. The vendor responds, “Mai achcha hai (I’m good).” The Japanese requests, “Achcha hai? Ek vada pav diya (You are good? Please give a vada pav). Meetha khatta chutney dedo nah (Please also give sweet and tangy condiment with it). Thank you.”
Koki Shishido then relishes the plate of vada pav and amusingly says, “Itadakimasu, mirchi. Vada pav meri jaan. Mumbai ki shaan (vada pav my love, the pride of Mumbai)” He also asks his followers to share the video with their Mumbaikar friends. The video attracted a flood of comments from Indian users. “Your expressions are awesome and genuine,” commented one user, before another joined in and wrote: “Mumbai aaye or wadapaw nhi khaye to kuchh nhi khaye (it is not a trip to Mumbai if it doesn’t involving eating the vada pav).”
