In a remarkable story from Derbyshire, a couple transformed an old grain silo into their dream home after purchasing it for just £1 (Rs 115). Bob Campbell and his partner Carol Ann made the purchase on eBay in an unexpected moment of online shopping while Bob was inebriated. This decision, initially made on a whim, has resulted in a unique and comfortable living space.
After acquiring the silo, Bob and Carol Ann invested approximately £4,000 (Rs 4.6 lakh) in its renovation. The couple has now lived in the converted silo for over six years. Inside, the house features facilities such as a bed, bathroom, and kitchen, making it a fully functional home.
In a conversation with The Sunthe couple shared more about their home. Bob recalled, “I thought a few weeks would be enough—maybe I’d lose interest by then—but it’s been over five years now.” Carol admitted she wasn’t very enthusiastic at first, but eventually came to see it as destiny. “These five years spent in nature have been wonderful,” she said.
Bob and Carol Ann have beautifully decorated the interior, using a fireplace made from an old gas cylinder and a dining table mounted in concrete with a saw blade. The walls are insulated with recycled plastic, and old pallets have been repurposed as bricks.
The kitchen is equipped with essentials like an oven, hob, kettle, and sink, with ample space for spices. The bedroom is located on the top floor, accessible via a ladder that retracts when not in use. The bathroom, hidden behind a door resembling a submarine hatch, includes a circular shower and a composting toilet.
The couple’s dedication to their home extends to the area surrounding the silo, where they have created numerous artworks and constructed a pond. Initially intended as an art piece, the silo gradually evolved into their small but charming residence, standing at about four metres high and four metres in diameter.
Despite its compact size, the home is a testament to Bob and Carol Ann’s hard work and creativity. Carol admits she was initially unenthusiastic about the project but later embraced it as her destiny. She reflects on their five years amidst nature as a wonderful experience.
