Trentino in Italy is rolling out a relocation package to revive its sparsely populated villages

In a bid to revitalise dwindling communities, a breathtaking village nestled in the scenic hills of northern Italy is offering a lucrative incentive to those willing to call it home. Authorities are extending an extraordinary deal: a free house and a financial grant equivalent to Rs 92 lakh, but all of it has one condition.

Across the world, declining populations have left entire villages deserted, particularly in countries like Japan and Italy. Many former residents have migrated to bustling urban centres, leaving behind once-thriving rural communities struggling to survive. To counteract this trend, several governments have launched initiatives to attract new residents, offering financial aid and property ownership. While Italy has previously made headlines with its €1 home schemes, this latest offer is even more generous.

According to a CNN report, the Italian province of Trentino, also known as the Autonomous Province of Trento, is rolling out a relocation package to revive its sparsely populated villages. The government is offering a total of €100,000 (approximately Rs 92.7 lakh) to individuals who choose to settle in one of the designated areas. The financial assistance is divided into two components: €80,000 (roughly Rs 74.2 lakh) is allocated for home renovations, while €20,000 (approximately Rs 18.5 lakh) is designated for purchasing a property.

While this opportunity is open to both Italian citizens and expatriates, there is a condition attached. Applicants must commit to residing in the property for a minimum of ten years. If they fail to fulfill this requirement and decide to leave prematurely, they will be obligated to repay the entire grant amount.

This ambitious initiative covers 33 villages across Trentino, all of which have been grappling with depopulation. With homes sitting vacant and community life dwindling, the government hopes to breathe new life into these charming settlements. The initiative is expected to attract individuals and families eager to embrace a tranquil lifestyle amidst the picturesque landscapes of northern Italy.
