Locals in a Mexican community are spooked after spotting an oarfish, known as the ‘doomsday fish’, at a beach in Mexico. The sighting of the fish, also referred to as the ‘catastrophe fish’, has heightened fears of potential natural disasters among the locals.
The oarfish was first spotted by surfers at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The fish, as long as a surfboard, was shimmering blue, resembling silver from a distance, with a brilliant red fin on its back. However, its tail appeared to be injured.
This fish can grow up to 36 feet in length and weigh as much as 200 kg. It is believed that sighting this fish is a bad omen, thought to herald earthquakes and other natural disasters.
According to a report in The Daily Mailan eyewitness in Mexico stated, “It is believed that when this fish is seen, a terrible tsunami is about to come.”
However, scientists have not been able to provide evidence to support these beliefs.
The Fish and its Connection to Destruction
Oarfish were seen on the beach months before the devastating tsunami in 2011, which claimed more than 15,000 lives and was followed by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. The oarfish was also spotted before the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in California last year.
Surfers who encountered the fish rushed to help, using their surfboards to push it back into the sea. Due to its appearance, the oarfish is often likened to a ‘sea serpent’. In Japanese mythology, it is said to be a messenger from the palace of the sea dragon god.
Japanese folklore suggests that oarfish reside beneath the islands of Japan and surface to warn of impending earthquakes. However, these fish are found worldwide, typically at depths ranging from 656 feet to 3,280 feet below the sea surface. An oarfish was also discovered on a California beach last November.
According to the report, researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography shared a picture of an oarfish found on the shore.
