It is often said that if girls live together in hostels, college dormitory or family, then their periods get secreted. The question arises that what is the reality behind this fact or it is just a myth, which has been going on for generations? Let’s know what science says in this matter?
What is the McLintock Effect?
During the year 1971, Martha McLintock claimed in one of his research letters that the periods of 135 college students living together were synchronized over time. Research revealed that the date of periods of all the girls living in the hostel started to come closer. McLintock described it as the effect of pheromones (chemical signals). He claimed that pheromones come out of a woman’s body and affect the periods of another woman. According to this theory, when women spend time together, pheromones affect each other’s hormonal system, causing their period dates to come closer. & Nbsp;
After McLintock, many researchers tried to repeat this study, then mixed results came out. In many studies, he supported the McLintock Effect, while some called it just a coincidence. Let us know what things came out in different research. & Nbsp;
Oxford University and Cloo App Study (2017)
During 2017, Oxford University and Period Tracking App Clue jointly checked the data of about 1500 women. In this study, 360 couples were made, in which there were roommates or friends like women with close relationships. Researchers checked at least three periods cycles of each winter. The difference in the starting dates of periods in 273 pairs increased, while this difference in just 79 pairs decreased. This means that instead of synchronizing periods, the date of periods separated in most cases. It was revealed in this study that living together does not increase the chances of synchronizing.
Study on Chinese College Students (2006)
Zhengwei Yang and Jeffrey Shank studied 186 Chinese college students for more than a year during 2006. These girl students were kept in a door in a group of 4 to 8. Researchers found that the date of the periods of these women was not synchronized. The difference in the onset of periods was seen on the basis of coincidence. It was revealed in this study that periods can be overlap due to differences, length, but it is not the result of pheromones or social proximity. & Nbsp;

Why this myth is so popular?
Despite mixing results, this notion of periods synchronized remains in the headlines even today. In fact, many women remember those occasions more when their periods match with a friend or roommate. They forget such occasions when this did not happen. At the same time, the average menstrual cycle is of 28 days, but it can be from 21 to 40 days. If the cycles of two women are of different lengths, then mathematically their periods can sometimes come together.
