Small lumps known as thyroid nodules can sometimes be made within the gland. Due to which a lot of concern can arise among the affected people. The good news is that in most cases these nodules are gentle and harmless. A specialist explained how genomics can help in diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

The thyroid is a small but important gland located in the neck that plays an important role in regulating energy levels, metabolism and body temperature through hormone secretions. However, small lumps known as thyroid nodules can sometimes be formed within the gland. Which can cause significant damage.

If you or your familiar is affected by this. So you are not alone, about 50-60% of people will experience thyroid nodules at some time. The good news is that in most cases these nodules are gentle and harmless.

Dr. Suruchi Aggarwal, head of scientific cases at Medinome, shared that our understanding of progress in genomics and thyroid nodules is developing and revolutionary changes are coming in the way of assessing and treating this general condition.

The thyroid nodule is often detected by monitoring frequent symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, swelling in the neck and changes in voice. When a patient comes with these symptoms, treatment options depend on the nature of the nodule. If the nodule is gentle, it does not pose immediate health risk, which eliminates the need for surgical intervention. However, in the rare case of malignant nodules; In only 5–10% of cases, there is a risk of cancer.

The evaluation of thyroid nodules usually depends on ultrasound and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Which is a process in which a fine needle extracts a sample of cells from the nodule for a microscopic testing. These cells with ultrasound imaging help healthcare professionals to assess the nature of nodules. However, in about 20–30% of cases, FNAC results are uncertain, both patients and healthcare providers remain without clear answers. This uncertainty can cause unnecessary surgery for nodules which become benign. To solve this challenge, healthcare professionals now use advanced molecular testing, analyzing nodules for other patterns that indicate genetic mutation and incompatibility.
