Dhanteras – October 18 (Saturday)

The festivities will commence with Dhanteras, observed on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of Kartik month. Dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of Ayurveda, and Lord Kuber, the god of wealth, the day is considered highly auspicious for purchasing gold, silver, utensils, and new household items. Devotees believe that such purchases bring prosperity and good fortune throughout the year.

Choti Diwali/Narak Chaturdashi – October 19 (Sunday)

The second day of Diwali, known as Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi, will be celebrated on Sunday, October 19. On this day, Lord Krishna and Lord Yama are worshipped. Tradition calls for lighting lamps across the home, including one in the southern direction for Yama, the god of death. The day commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, symbolising the end of darkness and ignorance.

Diwali/Ganesh-Lakshmi Puja – October 20 (Monday)

The main Diwali celebration, also known as Ganesh-Lakshmi Puja, will take place on Monday, October 20. Falling on the new moon day (new moon) of Kartik month, it is the most important day of the festival. Families decorate their homes with lamps and rangoli, perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening, and seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kuber for wealth, wisdom, and happiness. Lighting jazz on this dark night is believed to dispel ignorance and usher in spiritual light.

Govardhan Puja – October 22 (Wednesday)

The fourth day, Govardhan Puja, also known as EAwill be observed on Wednesday, October 22. The day commemorates Lord Krishna’s act of lifting the Govardhan mountain to protect the people of Braj from torrential rains sent by Lord Indra. Devotees prepare a variety of food items as offerings, symbolising gratitude and humility. Small Govardhan structures made of cow dung are also worshipped in many households.

Bhai Dooj – October 23 (Thursday)

The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj on Thursday, October 23, a day celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads, perform aartiand pray for their long life and prosperity. In return, brothers offer gifts as a token of affection and protection. Bhai Dooj stands as a beautiful reminder of familial love and harmony.
