Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan can’t seem to catch a break. First, he was mocked by former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg for his English-speaking skills and now a video of Rizwan copying Bollywood actress and producer Anushka Sharma’s Instagram story has shocked plenty of fans on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). Dressed in Pakistan’s Test whites, Rizwan can be seen chatting up with someone in what seems like an interview. “A different version of you exists in the minds of everyone who knows you,” he says. “The person you think of as “yourself” exists only for you, and even you don’t really know that is.”

The video that has been viewed over 6 lakh times comes attached with a screenshot of Anushka Sharma’s recent Instagram story. The ‘X’ poster captioned the video by saying, “Nothing. Just Rizwan reading Anushka’s Insta story.”

Stunned by this, users on the platform swiftly asked Grok, X’s in-built AI chatbot, if the video of Rizwan “stealing” Sharma’s words was real. It wasn’t. The poster quickly responded to queries with another video of Rizwan (from the same made-up video) telling people this: “That is a 100% real and authentic video. Why would you ask that question?” He adds, “I am really hurt, you need to be sensitive of my feelings.”

The user @TheCovertIndian also cooked up a conversation between Bhuvan and Captain Russell in the world of The river where the Indian skipper can be seen telling Russell about the modern-day cricket rules that he would like the British team to follow.

Anushka Sharma Story

Don’t worry, this wasn’t made up by AI. But Sharma’s post came with its own air of mystery. In her story posted on Instagram, Sharma wrote that different versions of us exist in the minds of others. The way others perceive us – family, siblings, co-workers or neighbours – differs from person to person. The image we have of ourselves is not the same in the minds of the others.

“A different version of you exists in the minds of everyone who knows you. The person you think of as ‘yourself’ only exists for you, and even you don’t really know who that is. Every person you meet, have a relationship with, or make eye contact on the street with, creates a version of ‘you’ in their heads.”

Sharma’s story comes after Virat Kohli’s disappointment with the BCCI’s recent policy that limits family time for players during overseas contests.

“You’re not the same person to your mom, your dad, your siblings than you are to your co-workers, your neighbors or your friends. There are a thousand different versions of yourself out there, in people’s minds. A ‘you’ exists in each version and yet your ‘you’, ‘yourself’ isn’t really a ‘someone’ at all,” Sharma further added.

What Did Brad Hogg Do?

Coming back to Rizwan, why exactly is Brad Hogg facing the backlash online? The former Aussie cricketer thought it was a good idea to get a content creator mock Pakistan cricketer’s English. The skit was funny for some, for others it fell flat.

In the video, Hogg can be seen speaking to a man who resembles Indian star Virat Kohli but mimicking Rizwan’s talking style.

“What do you think about Virat Kohli,” Hogg asked. “I and Virat are alike. He drinks water, I drink water. He eats food, I eat food. We are both the same; there is no difference,” the creator impersonating Rizwan responded.

Rizwan’s teammate Aamer Jamal wasn’t impressed and slammed Hogg over the “shameful act.”

“I just watched a video which is circulating on Twitter and other social media It is a very shameful act from @Brad_Hogg who called himself an international cricketer making fun of @iMRizwanPak about his English which is his 3rd language not even 2nd,” Jamal wrote on X.

Pakistan And English

You have to be the Lionel Messi of the world to get a pass. But if you happen to be a cricketer from Pakistan, you are expected to speak fluent English. Even your own Rameez Raja wouldn’t spare you. Remember when Raja, commentator and former Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, laughed at Inzamam-ul-Haq who was describing Abdur Rehman’s debut against West Indies in 2006 ODI?

Or when former Pakistan skipper Safaraz Ahmed responded with “my answer also same” to Virat Kohli who had given a lengthy answer while explaining the hype around India Vs Pakistan contest? Ahmed’s response during 2019 World Cup is still an active meme template.

Pakistan cricketers truly can’t catch a break.
