Dhanteras 2024: On Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda, appeared with the nectar pot from the churning of the ocean. For this reason, the tradition of buying utensils is followed every year on Dhanteras. It is said that whoever makes auspicious purchase of gold, silver, utensils, land and property on the day of Dhanteras, his wealth increases thirteen times. The doctors will worship Lord Dhanvantari, the nectar bearer. From this day onwards, lighting of lamps for Lord Yamraj will begin and will be lit for five days. According to the belief, metallic utensils of gold or silver purchased on this day give eternal happiness. People will buy new utensils or other new items.

Narak Chaturdashi is also celebrated with many other names like Narak Chaudas, Roop Chaudas and Roop Chaturdashi etc. Because it is celebrated before Diwali, it is also called Chhoti Diwali. On this day, Yamraj, the god of death, is worshipped. By lighting lamps in the corners of the house, one wishes for freedom from untimely death.

During Pradoshkaal, there is a tradition of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi along with Ganapati, Saraswati, Kuber and Lord Vishnu.

Bhai Dooj is the festival of the last day of the five-day Diwali festival. Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, sisters apply tilak on the forehead of their brothers and pray for their long life and happiness and prosperity. This festival is known by many names like Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj, Bhai Tika, Yama Dwitiya, Bhratri Dwitiya. It is written in Bhavishya Purana that on this day Yamuna had invited her brother Yama to have dinner at her house. This is the reason why even today sensible people do not eat midday meal at home. On this day, a brother of well-being and prosperity should eat food at his sister’s house out of love.
