If you have ever travelled on the Delhi Metro, you know the rule: the very first coach is reserved only for women. Yet, it is a rule that some men either ignore or forget, leading to awkward confrontations and complaints. Now, a young woman’s fiery video has gone viral for calling out the issue, sparking a fresh wave of debate online.
The woman, on Instagram, shared a video recorded at what appeared to be a Delhi Metro station and her words, perfectly capturing the frustration of countless women commuters, have struck a chord with thousands of viewers.
The First Coach Is for Ladies Only
In the viral clip, the woman can be seen addressing men directly. She makes it clear that the women’s coach in the metro is a non-negotiable space. In her words, “This is for all the men out there because I feel like the men of Delhi walk around with their ears closed. In the direction of the metro train, the first coach is reserved for women, which means the first coach is for ladies only. If you are not a woman, don’t enter the first coach.”
She further added, “And if you’ve entered by mistake, please move to the second coach. How dumb can a person be who still hasn’t remembered that the first coach is only for women? Make them feel uncomfortable outside too, and also make them uncomfortable in the metro’s safe space.”
Criticism For Women
The woman’s strongest criticism, however, wasn’t just for men but also for women who bring male companions into the coach and argue that it’s “just for one stop,”. According to the woman, the rule doesn’t change based on the number of stations and exceptions send the wrong message and make it harder to apply boundaries.
Moving ahead, the woman even shared an incident where she reminded a man that he could be fined for entering the coach. Surprisingly? The man responded that he did not mind paying the challan. According to her, this reflects a careless attitude that completely misses the purpose of the rule which is about respecting a safe space created for women.
Divided Opinions
The video has sparked divided opinions online. Many viewers supported her, sharing that they too, had witnessed similar situations where women were made uncomfortable by men in the women’s coach. One of them wrote, “I think they do it not out of ignorance but because of a mix of entitlement and disregard.” Another added, “I’ve seen this many times.”
Others, however, had different opinions, as they sarcastically took a jibe with one writing, “We are women, we are equal to men. Also, we need a different coach.” Meanwhile, a section of people felt that sometimes mistakes happen, but even they agreed that men should shift to the general coach when reminded.
