The art world is going through a technological renaissance with the help of generative AI. AI-driven creativity is reshaping our experiences of creating, interpreting and experiencing art. The latest example of this innovation is the work of a Delhi University student. Rashi Pandey used generative AI to create a new interpretation of the world-renowned masterpiece, the Mona Lisa.
Rashi Pandey’s version, which users dubbed “Monika Bhabhi” or “Shona Lisa”, has gone viral on social media. The recreation shows the subject in Da Vinci’s masterpiece wearing a vibrant outfit with customised jewellery.
Generative AI, machine learning and deep neural networks have expanded the horizons of creativity and performance. This technology means that with the help of inputs from other pieces of art, algorithms can design other original art pieces. In Rashi Pandey’s case, AI was employed to alter the Mona Lisa and change the woman’s Western clothes and almost subtle facial expressions into explicitly Indian ones.
Sharing the picture on X (formerly Twitter), Rashi Pandey wrote: “I made the Indian version of Mona Lisa using AI. Give her a name.”
A user suggested: “Mona Sharma”.
Another used said: “Monali Shah.”
“Monika Lisa Singh”, said another.

Yet another user named her “Mona Pandey”.
Few users compared her with Kareena Kapoor Khan. “Seeing her cheekbones, I would say Kareena Kapoor 2.0.”

Many individuals are employing AI to reimagine existing things in completely different situations. An AI artist previously created Indian versions of the FRIENDS cast. As a result, AI created the Desi equivalents of Joey Tribbiani, Phoebe Buffay, Monica Gellar, Ross Gellar, Chandler Bing, and Rachel Green.
Similarly, a well-known AI-based art account called AI Dreams envisioned younger incarnations of popular musicians including Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
The imaginative works enable us to imagine these rock icons as toddlers, their unique characteristics whimsically transformed into cute infant personas.
