Online shopping has greatly simplified our lives, but this convenience can sometimes be accompanied by the risk of fraud. A recent incident in Sheikh Sarai, within the Malviya Nagar police station jurisdiction of New Delhi, sheds light on this concern, where a college employee fell victim to an online scam.
The victim ordered a mobile phone through cash on delivery (COD) from an online shopping website. Upon receiving the parcel and making the online payment, he was shocked to discover packets of soap and biscuits instead of his phone. Adding to the peculiarity, a second delivery person arrived with a mobile phone parcel, demanding payment. The bewildered victim filed a police complaint.
Police Statement
According to the police, the victim’s complaint states that he placed the COD phone order on February 11. On February 12, he received a call from an individual claiming to be the delivery person, informing him that the parcel would arrive the next day.
A Rude Awakening
On February 13, the delivery person arrived with the parcel, and the victim paid Rs 16,680 via UPI. Upon opening the parcel, he found soap and biscuit packets instead of his phone. When he contacted the delivery person, he was advised to contact the shopping website.
Seeking Resolution
The delivery person’s phone subsequently became unreachable, and the website remained unresponsive to emails. Later that day, a second delivery person arrived with a mobile phone parcel, demanding Rs 16,680. Refusing to accept the parcel, the victim filed a complaint with the Malviya Nagar police station. The police are currently investigating the matter.

- Refrain from sharing personal details over the phone.
- Insist on the delivery person opening the parcel before making payment.
