A chartered accountant from Delhi has drawn criticism for a LinkedIn post that detailed three “corporate lessons” she took away from her maid’s resignation after she was turned down for a pay rise. According to Meenal Goel, her maid quit because she wouldn’t raise her pay to Rs 3,000 a month. On January 13, Goel wrote on LinkedIn about her maid’s resignation and the three things she took away from it.

“My maid resigned yesterday. Why? Because we didn’t want to give her a Rs 1,000 raise,” Meenal Goel wrote. According to the chartered accountant, her maid gave her a final word before she left, adding, “Call only when you are ready to pay me Rs 3,000.”

Meenal Goel elaborated in her LinkedIn post on the three corporate lessons she took away from her maid’s resignation –

(1) Don’t be afraid to ask for a raise,

(2) Never discredit your efforts, and

(3) Don’t settle for less.

In the first lesson, Goel stated “My boss will laugh me off if I do. If I have the luck, I will get the raise. I am putting in the hard work, I am sure bosses will do justice.”

“Sorry No! Never, leave your personal growth in the hands of – fate, God or other humans. You should take charge of your growth,” she added in the first corporate lesson.

As she described her second session, Goel wrote, “Do you rate yourself low in year-end self-evaluations? Why do you say to your colleagues that – you are not good at it? Why do you think that your contribution to the team is smaller?”

“People believe what you make them believe. If you believe in yourself and are a good team player, so will your colleagues. If you believe you suck at your job, so will your colleagues,” she also stated, adding, “Exhibit self-confidence” to conclude the para.

Finally, the third lesson, as per Goyal is “Next year we will promote you. Next year you will get a better increment. What you are asking for is beyond our budget. Sorry, this is the best we can offer for your role. These are the statements I have heard in my 6 years of corporate life.”

“And the only thing I have learnt is – ‘Don’t settle for less’. However, in the end, things will happen in your favour. I hope my share helps you to take charge of your growth,” Goyal’s lengthy post ended.

Several users criticised Goel for “glorifying the exploitation of domestic workers” as what she perceived to be career guidance swiftly descended into controversy.

Debates over the mistreatment of domestic workers, particularly in cities like Delhi, were triggered by the post. Many users criticised the “hypocrisy” of white-collar workers who underpaid people in the unorganised sector while demanding higher wages and work-life balance.

A comment under her LinkedIn post read, “Only on LinkedIn dot com will you find such entitled people giving corporate lessons after exploiting their househelp to the extent of making them resign.”

Another countered, “Meenal, your insights are truly inspiring. It’s a powerful reminder that we must advocate for ourselves and never underestimate our worth in the corporate world. Thank you for sharing.”

“Glad the maid walked out of bonded labour,” the user wrote on LinkedIn.

“Hey man, how about you stop exploiting workers next time? That could be a corporate lesson for you,” another commented.
