Leading food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy have raised their platform fees by Rs 3-4 per order, effective immediately, leaving users with higher charges just as the festive season kicks in. Zomato increased its fee from Rs 6 to Rs 10 per order, while Swiggy followed suit, hiking its fee from Rs 7 to Rs 10.
Zomato explained the increase, stating, “This fee helps us pay our bills to keep Zomato running. To maintain services during the festive season, it has increased slightly.” The platform fee, which was first introduced in 2023 at Rs 2 per order, has steadily risen over time.
Swiggy implemented a similar fee structure in the same year but has yet to provide any communication about whether this latest hike is temporary or permanent. Unlike Zomato, which framed its fee increase as a seasonal adjustment to manage operational costs during the Diwali rush, Swiggy has not issued any clarification, leaving users to speculate on the duration and purpose of the new charges.
Both companies have faced criticism from users on social media, especially as these fees are in addition to GST, restaurant fees, and delivery costs. The hike affects all consumers, including Zomato’s Gold members.
As soon as the fee hike was announced it sparked a massive outrage on social media with netizens calling out the companies for making online food ordering too expensive for customers.
