
UPI Down: The day of Saturday, 12 April 2025 started with troubles for crores of people making UPI payments across the country. A large technical outage in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) stalled popular apps like Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay for hours. Due to this, people had to face huge difficulties in everyday shopping, bill payment and transfer of money.
Payment is failing
As soon as UPI was down, there was a flood of complaints on the downdetector. According to the Downdetector website, more than 2,300 complaints were filed till about 1 pm. At the same time, about 81 percent of the users said that payment failed. Whereas, 17 percent faced fund transfer in fund transfer. At the same time, 2 percent told the purchases related problems. It became clear from this outage that the problem was not limited to only one app or bank, but there was a big disturbance in the entire UPI network.
Why did the UPI system run every second?
The UPI system runs 24 hours, 365 days, without any holiday. More than 17 billion transactions and more than Rs 25 lakh crore is paid through UPI every month in India. More than 630 banks in the world are associated with this system, and now UPI is also working in countries like Nepal, UAE, France, Bhutan, Singapore, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.
83 percent of digital payments in the country is only through UPI. In such a situation, this outage is a big shock, especially when the government is promoting Digital India globally.
What NPCI said?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued its official statement on the UPI outage. The NPCI has said, “There are some technical problems in the UPI system currently, due to which some transactions are failing. Our technical team is engaged in fixing this problem. We will soon fully fix it and will keep giving updates. We are sorry for this problem.”
