Zakir Naik Remarks on Christians: Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who was declared a fugitive in India, is once again embroiled in controversy. His statements given during a public address organized in Pakistan have created resentment among the Christian community. Pakistan’s Christian leader and human rights activist Dr. Marshall has written a letter registering his deep objection on this matter.
Dr. Marshall has said in a letter that the public speeches of Dr. Zakir Naik have deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community. He not only questioned the authenticity of Christianity but also insulted the holy scriptures and hurt the faith of Christian priests and scholars. He said that Naik’s statements not only promoted religious intolerance but also hurt the national unity of Pakistan.
Resentment over lack of government response
It has also been said in the letter that the government’s lack of formal apology on this issue has caused even deeper dissatisfaction in the Christian community. Despite this, the government has repeatedly assured of maintaining religious harmony and respect for all. Dr. Marshall said that the silence on Naik’s statements has further deepened the feeling of marginalization of minorities.
Reference to Articles 20 and 36 of the Constitution
Dr. Marshall told Pakistani newspaper Dawn that under Article 20 of the Constitution of Pakistan, every citizen has the right to propagate, practice and follow his religion. He also said that Article 36 obliges the state to protect the legitimate rights of minorities, which has been hurt by Naik’s statements.
Dr Marshall has appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari to ensure the protection of these constitutional rights of minorities and take immediate effective action against such divisive incidents, especially when they are taking place under state patronage.
