A Chinese man has been granted the legal right to keep the hefty sum of 300,000 yuan (approximately 35 lakhs) gifted to him by his ex-girlfriend as a means of apology after she was caught in a shocking affair with his nephew. This decision was handed down reportedly by a Shanghai court, leaving many people intrigued and debating the case’s twists and turns. The story began in 2018 when Li, the man at the centre of this issue, and Xu, his ex-girlfriend, started dating. By 2020, their seemingly normal relationship took a nosedive after Li reportedly found out about Xu’s betrayal that she was romantically involved with his own nephew.

The discovery left Li devastated and ready to call it quits, but Xu attempted to salvage the situation with a heartfelt letter of regret. “I have deeply reflected on my mistakes. Yes, I’ve cheated on you multiple times, causing you immense pain. I am sincerely remorseful. I will correct my mistakes and compensate you with my sincerity,” she admitted in her letter, as reported by South China Morning Post.

To prove her sincerity, Xu reportedly transferred 300,000 yuan to Li in several bank transactions over the course of two days. Her gesture convinced Li to forgive her and they decided to give their relationship another chance. However, the peace was short-lived. By 2022, Li discovered that Xu had continued her involvement with his nephew and this time, he ended the relationship for good.

After their breakup, Xu demanded that Li return the 300,000 yuan, claiming the money was conditional upon their eventual marriage. Since the relationship had ended and the marriage never happened, she argued that she was entitled to a refund. Li, on the other hand, firmly refused, stating that Xu’s repeated infidelity and the emotional pain it caused were reason enough for him to keep the money. He considered it a form of compensation for the hurt she had inflicted.

The disagreement escalated into a legal battle. When the court reviewed the case, it sided with Li, determining that the money had been given voluntarily by Xu during a time when she hoped to repair their relationship. The court ruled that it was not a gift tied to marriage and that Li had no obligation to return it, SCMP reported.
