Chinese government officials along with Chinese social media users took to AI-generated memes to troll US President Donald Trump as his steep tariff hike targeting Chinese goods, which took effect Thursday, brings Washington’s additional rate on many products to 145 percent.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Thursday posted a meme on X suggesting that Donald Trump’s tariffs had caused the cost of his “Make America Great Again” hats to spike by over 50 percent.

The image showed a red MAGA cap with a “Made in China” tag. However official merchandise is manufactured in the United States. Some unofficial versions, however, may be produced in China.

Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu on Thursday re-shared a meme first posted on the social media app Rednote showing MAGA hat prices more than doubling under Trump’s tariffs.

AI-generated memes mocking Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs have also gone viral across Chinese platforms and X. Some show overweight Americans working in factories, supposedly making Tesla products, in a jibe to Trump’s push for revived domestic manufacturing.

One such clip of Americans, who are depicted as overweight, in a textile mill has racked up nearly 20 million views and more than 227,000 likes on X.

Another meme making the rounds mocks Trump’s bizarre 10 percent tariff on the uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands, showing penguins protesting the move.

The latest 125 percent figure on China, aimed at addressing practices Washington has deemed unfair, contains notable exclusions.

It excludes products like steel and aluminum imports, as well as autos, which Trump slapped separate 25 percent tariffs on under separate regimes.

The number also does not apply to goods such as copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber, and energy products — some of which Trump has signaled plans to target separately too.

All of this paints a more complicated picture of tariff levels, even as tensions soar between Washington and Beijing.
