Artificial Intelligence (AI) is slowly but surely shaping the future, making lives better, easier and smarter. AI’s influence has seeped into the business world as well, opening doors for innovation and growth. Believe it or not, one of the biggest adult toy makers in China has witnessed a surge in the sale of sex dolls thanks to the company’s adoption of open-source generative AI. According to reports, the models manufactured at the industry — WMDoll have recorded a 30 per cent increase in sales this year after they improved the user experience through AI-driven tools.
Shortly after OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, WMDoll began to explore the AI chatbot’s potential to transform the sex toy industry, reported the South China Morning Post. Since then, the Zhongshan-based organisation has incorporated ChatGPT, to create real-life-resembling and AI-powered sex dolls.
In an interaction with the outlet, Liu Jiangxia, the founder and chief executive of WMDoll revealed, that AI “makes the dolls more responsive and interactive, which offers users a better experience.” When asked about concerns related to data privacy, Liu assured that the data was stored locally in the place where the dolls are used. Additionally, the company does not have access to the models.
WMDoll integrates its latest MetaBox series with an advanced AI module. It is connected to cloud computing services. These systems enable large language models (LLMs) to process data from each device in real time. The company has adopted various open-source LLMs, including Meta Platforms’ Llama AI models. Interestingly, they can be customised and deployed globally for enhanced performance and user interaction.
The new sex dolls designed with either a thermoplastic elastomer or silicone exterior feature a durable metal skeleton. With this innovative approach, WMDoll aims to boost its sales further.
After devoting a year to its development process, Liu Jiangxia and her team delivered more than 100 prototypes of their LLM-powered MetaBox series to Europe and North America-based customers.
Unlike traditional sex dolls, offering basic responses and an inability to engage in meaningful conversations, the new AI-enhanced models are equipped with five different personalities. Being more expressive, they can even pick up unfinished interactions from days ago.
