A bizarre job advertisement in China has sparked a mix of amusement and shock online. A funeral home in Rushan is hiring for the position of “morgue manager,” with a monthly salary of 2,200 yuan (around Rs 25,600). However, there’s a unique requirement for this job – a candidate must spend 10 minutes inside a freezing cold morgue to qualify for an interview.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the job was listed by the Rushan Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security on December 6. The morgue manager position requires male candidates, under the age of 45, with at least a junior secondary school education.
Applicants must also be available to work 24-hour shifts. In addition, they need to pay a 70 yuan (approximately Rs 816) exam fee. The job is based on a three-year contract and the hiring process includes various stages, such as the morgue test, interviews, medical exams, background checks and a six-month probation period. The position does not come with bian zhi, a system that guarantees permanent, lifelong employment in China.
A staff member from the Rushan Funeral Services Centre explained that the 10-minute morgue test was a way to assess if candidates could handle the job’s environment. “The special requirement is just a test method because some people have strong taboos or fears of staying too long in such settings, but our work requires someone who can remain in the room for more than 10 minutes,” the staff member said.
The unusual job ad has sparked a wave of reactions online with many finding it both funny and strange.
One user joked, “This is much better than interviewing 10 living people. At least they did not ask me to stay in a crematorium for 10 minutes!”
Another commented, “You have never worked before? The dead are not frightened because after starting to work, your grievances will weigh more than that of a ghost.”
“I could stay for 10 hours, just give me a book and a bottle of water. But the pay is too low,” someone remarked.
“It is not the fear that holds you back, but the salary,” said another person.
The monthly salary for this position is 2,200 yuan after tax and social insurance payments with additional allowances for night shifts.
“In practice, jobs like body management and crematory work offer higher pay because they’re more specialised,” said a funeral home management expert from southwestern China. “You can use professional psychological tests or set up internships, but this method is inappropriate.”
