A pediatric surgeon from Chhattisgarh, Dr Tanmay Motiwala, was overwhelmed after receiving an unexpected and deeply touching gift from one of his former patients. In a post that’s capturing hearts online, he shared the touching surprise package filled with handmade gifts as his wedding gift.

Dr Motiwala, who had invited Khushi to the celebration, revealed on social media that she couldn’t attend but instead sent him a bundle of handmade gifts. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the doctor also posted photos of the thoughtful gifts and shared a light-hearted moment attached to one of them.

“My heart is full. Had happy tears today. I received a package from Khushi. A surprise that touched me deeply,” Dr Motiwala wrote in his post.

“I had invited her to my wedding, but she couldn’t make it. Instead, she sent me a set of beautiful handmade gifts. Yes, Khushi is my patient, but more than that, she’s a dear friend. A brave cancer survivor. A child who has taught me more about life than most ever could,” he added.

While opening the gift, his wife had noticed that “Donkey” was written to address him, prompting Dr Motiwala to recount a humorous memory from the hospital.

He shared, “I said while taking rounds and teaching her how to spell her name, ‘D O N K E Y = P A R I.’. She replied, ‘D O N K E Y = TANMAY.’ We both burst out laughing.” This innocent joke became an affectionate nickname of their innocent and endearing bond, which she later used on the gift.

Khushi’s journey

In a previous post from 2022, Dr Motiwala shared Khushi’s medical journey. Diagnosed with a chest wall tumour at just five years old, he revealed that she was a shy and resistant child at first. But with time, their connection grew deeper.

“I sat there for an hour trying to talk to her, joke around, show cartoons on my phone, and tickle her. Nothing worked. This kid was stubborn. Her chemo started, and we started talking. Over time she would hold my finger while I took evening rounds. She would use my earphones and listen to songs while I worked,” he recalled.

Internet Reactions

The heartwarming post has quickly gone viral, with many reacting emotionally to the story. Many praised the loving bond shared between the two, while others were moved to read this story.

“Such a beautiful bond between the two of you. May it grow from strength to strength,” a user commented.

Another added, “You are a true beacon of inspiration; the gifts are a powerful testament to the impact you have on your patients.”

“The best thread I am reading before sleeping. Loved it, my dear!!! God bless, prayers.” Read a comment.

An account posted, “Beautifully written… It’s great that you share such a wonderful bond with your patients.”

“Such stories need to be heard more,” commented a user.

Reflecting on the experience and what Khushi meant to her, Dr Motiwala expressed, “She also taught me that the doctor-patient bond goes much beyond tests, surgeries, and bills.” He concluded by saying the girl taught him how to fight in life and never let that smile fade away.
