A shocking incident in Bengaluru has sparked outrage online after a food delivery executive was attacked by restaurant staff, reportedly, for speaking Kannada. The entire episode, captured on CCTV near Hesaraghatta Road, has raised serious concerns about linguistic tensions in the city, fueling a flurry of opinions on social media. The video, which has since gone viral, shows a disturbing altercation between the delivery executive and a member of the restaurant staff. Though much of their conversation remains unclear, one statement from the delivery executive cuts through – “I am not saying anything, I am talking in Kannada.”
What follows is a violent escalation, as the executive is punched, kicked, verbally harassed and even dragged across the restaurant floor
As the video circulated, many expressed their anger and alleged that the delivery executive, who spoke in Kannada, was attacked by non-Kannada-speaking staff. The situation has sparked a heated debate on the city’s growing language divide.
A section of people have demanded stricter measures against businesses that disrespect local culture, arguing that such establishments should be penalised. “Cancel the licence of businesses that disrespect local culture. Karnataka’s businesses should uplift local workers, not import outsiders who show linguistic chauvinism,” read a comment.
“We have voted for you and elected you to preserve and promote Kannada identity and heritage… don’t you have a little gratitude for Kannada? Why should we take socially responsible people to correct this?” asked another X user.
One person tried to clarify the matter saying, “Lies. The restaurant fellow is the one demanding that the delivery guy talks in Kannada and then assaults him.”
