A cat and a sheep beat other animals to win the prestigious annual “Couple of the Year” contest at the Odessa Zoo in Ukraine. The zoo revealed the unexpected winners on Facebook after revealing the finalists on YouTube earlier this week. The other animal pairs competing for the title consisted of lemurs, tigers and porcupines.
Masazhik, a cat, and Bagel, a lamb were announced as the winner of the contest. The pair was also rewarded during a ceremony on Valentine’s Day. Sharing the exciting news, the Zoo highlighted the wonderful camaraderie between two completely different species. They wrote on their Facebook page, “The contest ‘Couple of the Year – 2025’ is over. The winners of this year are a pair of lambs, Bagel, and a cat, Masazhik. Such a combination of friendly relationships of completely different animals is possible only in the Odessa Zoo. We invite everyone to the awarding of winners.”
The cat Masazhik, whose name hilariously translates to “massage therapist,” was often spotted comfortably perched on the lamb Bagel’s back. Eventually, becoming a popular sight at the zoo for visitors.
The heartwarming contest soon caught the attention of social media users who showered love on the pair. Reacting to the pictures, a user said, “I knew no one could stand a chance against a cat.” Another said, “Congratulations to the winners. What a lovely, usual pair.” One more user added, “I had my vote in for them, a great couple.” Many users also reacted to the post with heart emojis.
The winners of the contest were chosen by the Odessa Zoo employees. In a subsequent post a few days back, the zoo expressed gratitude towards the workers and volunteers who helped in organising the event. On the day of celebrations, February 14, a painting workshop was also held for the guests. Further, they informed that a lamb named Valentinkou was born on that day.
The ‘Couple of the Year’ tradition at the Odessa Zoo continues to engage locals and animal lovers across the globe, with last year’s winners being a pair of mated sheep.
