The photographer used the Hydro Atlantic shipwreck to create a new Guinness World Record for the deepest underwater photo session.

A Canadian photographer has set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the deepest underwater model photo shoot. The photo shoot was conducted on the deck of the Hydro Atlantic shipwreck in Boca Raton, Florida, USA, at a depth of around 50 meters (163.38 feet).
Because the Hydro Atlantic site is beyond the decompression zone and poses special challenges for the team, it was chosen with purpose. With this bold endeavour, photographer Steven Haining, who had previously broken this record twice, regained his crown.
In June 2021 and September 2023, Steven Haining set records by shooting at depths of 21 feet and 30 meters, respectively. However, in December 2023, Canadians Kim Bruneau and Pia Oyarzun broke Haining’s record by conducting a photoshoot at 131 feet in the Bahamas.
After that, Steven Haining and his crew set out on this incredible underwater adventure to regain their crown.
Ciara Antowski, the model, and the rest of Steven Haining’s crew underwent rigorous training to guarantee safety and accuracy at such great depths. Antowski, who modelled without an oxygen tank while wearing a flowing white gown and black boots, made the photo shoot even more challenging.
The shoot was originally scheduled to run for 20 minutes, but because of the dangers of narcosis, a condition brought on by high pressure, it was shortened to 15 minutes. In addition, the team had to deal with issues like shipwreck rust, sharks, fishermen’s interference, and making sure Antowski was safe while submerged.

On Instagram, Steven Haining gave fans a sneak peek at the record-breaking endeavour and described how he and his team came across two sharks while doing a reconnaissance dive.
“We spooked away the sharks and found a safe spot on the wreck for the shoot,” Steven Haining captioned his post.
Considering the accomplishment, he told Guinness World Records, “We practised more than planned and arrived in good weather. After scouting the wreck, we knew exactly what to do, and everything was perfectly set.”
