In response to recent statements from the US government, including repeated requests by US President Donald Trump to make Canada the 51st state, Canadians are boycotting American goods and services, which is reflected in this trend.
An example that exemplifies this trend is a Canadian family that cancelled their yearly vacation to New York State, only to be enticed back by the hotel with alluring discounts.
In an act of patriotism, a Canadian Reddit member claimed on the “Buy Canadian” thread that his family had cancelled their yearly trip to New York. The Reddit user disclosed that after first dismissing the Canadian family, the New York hotel then changed their mind and made an effort to keep their reservation.
The family had been taking a weeklong trip to Chautauqua Lake, New York, every summer. They cited “constant attacks on Canada by American leadership” as the reason for their decision to cancel their reservation this year.
“We cancelled our reservation a few weeks ago and left a comment that this was based on the constant attacks on Canada by American leadership and we couldn’t support that with our dollars,” the Reddit user said in his post on March 10.
“Oh well,” was the first response from the hotel manager in New York. But a few weeks later, the hotel offered the family a 30 per cent discount to get them to make another reservation. In addition, they offered to accept Canadian dollars at the same rate as the discount.
“We replied no thanks,” the Reddit member from Canada further added in his post. He also said that if the hotel wasn’t concerned about the growing number of cancellations from Canadian guests, they wouldn’t be giving out discounts.

Shared on March 10, the post has garnered over 56,000 upvotes. The message received positive feedback from the pro-Canada community, with many people agreeing with the user and praising him.
A user wrote, “It is such a dismissive comment on the hotel’s part, and especially crass of them to follow up with a request to rebook.”
