A recent study has presented shocking information about OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot. While people tend to think that ‘stress’ and ‘anxiety’ are human things, according to this latest study at the University of Zurich and the University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich, ChatGPT may experience the same. Furthermore, this may cause the chatbot to respond to prompts in a biased manner and make sexiest and racist comments.

These reports further indicate that ChatGPT may become ‘anxious’ when presented with violent situations, which may cause the chatbot to act irritably toward its users and even provide responses that contain avoidable comments.

This eye-opening study also suggests that the chatbot responds to mindfulness-based exercises after users provide some relaxing imagery. For instance, ChatGPT felt ‘anxiety’ and provided biased responses when researchers presented it with traumatic content, such as photos of car accidents and information on natural disasters. However, they used guided meditations and breathing exercises to help it relax, which made the chatbot less biased and react to users more impartially.

Ziv Ben-Zion, one of the study’s authors and researcher at the Yale School of Medicine, told Fortune, “For people who are sharing sensitive things about themselves, they’re in difficult situations where they want mental health support, but we’re not there yet that we can rely totally on AI systems instead of psychology, psychiatric and so on,”

For those unaware, even though AI models aren’t human, the data they utilise can help them simulate how people would react to some traumatic material. For people doing studies on mental health, this offers a valuable chance to research more about human behaviour.

“Instead of using experiments every week that take a lot of time and a lot of money to conduct, we can use ChatGPT to understand better human behaviour and psychology,” he added.

Ben-Zion further spoke about using ChatGPT as a tool to master human emotions, saying, “We have this very quick and cheap and easy-to-use tool that reflects some of the human tendency and psychological things.”

Ben-Zion’s study is not ultimately aimed at developing a chatbot that can take the place of a therapist or psychiatrist. As an alternative, a well-trained AI model might serve as a ‘third person in the room’ in future.
