‘But What Did I Do?’: Accidental Butt Dial Exposes How US Woman Covered Up Murder

A 62-year-old woman was arrested in Texas after an accidental butt dial allegedly recorded her helping a friend cover up the murder of a flight attendant. Police said Joni Thomas assisted her longtime friend, Dennis William Day, in disposing of the body of Rana Nofal Soluri, 47, an Envoy Air flight attendant who was reported missing in March.

According to investigators, Rana Nofal Soluri was killed by her roommate, Dennis Day, 66, following an argument at their home in Fort Worth. Dennis Day admitted he “snapped” and strangled her “with his bare hands.”

Dennis Day told detectives he stuffed Rana Nofal Soluri’s body into a large black trash bin and transported it about 70 miles away. He was arrested in June and charged with her murder.

How Joni Thomas Was Implicated

Police allege that after the killing, Dennis Day phoned Joni Thomas and asked her to bring her pickup truck. Together, they are accused of transporting Rana Nofal Soluri’s body to Bowie, Texas, where it was dumped off a bridge.

Detectives later discovered a voicemail on Joni Thomas’s phone that appeared to have been recorded accidentally. The audio, described as a “butt dial,” allegedly captured the pair struggling to move a heavy object. A male voice can be heard saying, “Hey … help me,” and “Make sure the lid’s on … I got you messed up in this.”

Investigators said the recording was consistent with Dennis Day’s own account of how Rana Nofal Soluri’s body was moved.

Joni Thomas was taken into custody on August 26 and has been charged with tampering with physical evidence while Dennis Day remains behind bars facing a murder charge.
