A British tennis player has come under severe criticism after she told her opponent to “put deodorant” during her first-round encounter at the Rouen Open on April 15.

Harriet Dart, 28, was playing against Lois Boisson of France when she commented about the odour coming from her opponent’s body, as per The Mirror. Dart was behind in the second set at the time, having already lost the first one 6-0 in less than 30 minutes.

Dart rose from her chair during a changeover and went to the umpire, saying, “Can you tell her to wear deodorant?” She made the same request again as per the publication, adding, “Because of the smell. Can you tell her to wear deodorant? She smells really bad.”

Dart’s request went unanswered by the umpire and Boisson had returned to the court by then, so it seemed she was not aware of the remark. Later, the French player posted a match video on her Instagram story, but she didn’t address the matter.

Dart responded to the incident on Instagram after the remark caused an instant social media outcry.

Many criticised Dart’s remarks online, calling them “pathetic,” and some even called for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) to take disciplinary action.

Dart lost the second set 6-3. The WTA has not yet to react on whether or not it will take any action.

Dart apologised publicly on Instagram, saying, “Hey everyone, I want to apologise for what I said in court today. It was a heat-of-the-moment comment that I truly regret. That’s not how I want to carry myself and I take full responsibility. I have a lot of respect for Lois and how she competed today. I’ll learn from this and move forward.”

Boisson, who is making her first appearance on the WTA Tour this season and is recovering from injuries that dropped her to 303rd in the rankings, responded humorously. On Instagram, she shared a picture of herself on court with a Dove deodorant above her hand. She tagged the company and wrote that they “apparently need a collab.”
