BRICS countries have expressed concern over the spread of trade-related actions such as ‘indiscriminate increase’, especially on measures used as ‘controlled’ means that such practices are at risk of ‘global South’ countries marginalized.

BRICS foreign/international relations ministers held their annual meeting on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday (September 27, 2025). This meeting was chaired by India as the future president of BRICS for 2026.

BRICS countries expressed concern over unilateral fees

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the ministers expressed concern over the spread of ‘trade-related actions, whether it is indiscriminately in the form of fee and non-fee measures, or as protectionism. Measures used as especially a means of pressure (inserting), which further reduce global trade, obstructs global supply chains, and there is a risk of uncertainty in international economic and business activities, which can further increase existing economic inequalities and affect the chances of global economic growth.

BRICS countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates expressed ‘serious concern’ about the increase in unilateral fees and non-fee measures, which deform the business and not in line with the rules of the World Trade Organization. BRICS should protect multilateral trade system

‘Global South’ means countries often known as developing, less developed or underdeveloped and are mainly located in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar highlighted that trade flow is being affected due to increasing protectionism, duty volatility and non-fee obstacles, so the BRICS should protect the multilateral trade system.

He said that when there is pressure on multilateralism, BRICS stands firmly as a strong voice of logic and creative change. He said in a post on ‘X’, “In a turbulent world, BRICS should strengthen the message of peace establishment, dialogue, diplomacy and international law.”

Strong condemnation of Pahalgam attack in BRICS

He further stated that BRICS should further strengthen its collective call for comprehensive improvement in the major organs of the United Nations, especially the United Nations Security Council. The next stage of BRICS cooperation will be based on technology and innovation.

Jaishankar said that India’s chairmanship in BRICS will focus on sustainable development through food and energy security, climate change and digital changes, startups, innovation and strong development partnership. In a joint statement, ministers on 22 April of Jammu and Kashmir Pahalgam Strictly condemned the terrorist attack in which 26 people were killed and many were injured.
