An American woman recently found herself questioned about embracing Indian culture after marrying an Indian man. In her latest post, she responds to inquiries about why she wears a mangalsutra and bindis—symbols traditionally worn by married Hindu women in India. Jessica Vernekar, married to a Goan man, shared that she frequently encounters such questions. Through her post, she not only addresses these curiosities but also showcases her deep appreciation and connection to Indian traditions.

In the clip, the woman was walking out of what appears to be a grocery store, with a mangalsutra around her neck, anklets on her feet, bangles and other accessories. A text overlay describes her experiences in the United States, where she received unexpected queries about wearing these traditional Indian accessories. In her reply to such a question, she says, “I said I’m married to an Indian Hindu man.” Furthermore, she wonders if it is unusual for a married Hindu woman to wear such symbols asking if she responded appropriately and how they would react in a similar situation. In the caption, she wrote, “I get the weirdest questions in USA Is it not common to wear these things for a married Hindu woman? Comment below Did I answer correctly? How would you reply?”

Many people commented on her post, saying that she did the right thing. While some praised her for embracing the culture, others mentioned that she was not liable to answer people for her choices.

A user stated, “As a married Hindu woman, it is our pride to wear them, sis, more power to you,” another said, “You look soo amazing. A person stated, The problemm is ignorance..instead of learning new cultures, they rather ask stupid questions.”

An individual also shared a similar experience narrating, “Married 23 years and I still asked: do I like Indian food? Do I Know how to cook it? And when the answer is yes, it’s a huge surprise.”

Others were simply angry at people asking these questions. “Why don’t some ladies mind their own business?’ said one while another one commented, “U don’t need to reply if they know the meaning of this ornament they won’t ask.”
