Bilawal Bhutto on Terrorism: Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto has admitted that his country’s past has been to support terrorist organizations. A few days before Bhutto’s comment, the country’s Defense Minister Khwaja Asif had said that Islamabad has been doing ‘dirty work’ to help terrorism for decades.
What did Bilawal Bhutto say?
According to media reports, Bhutto said in a conversation with Sky News on 1 May, “As far as the Defense Minister (Asif) said, I don’t think it is a secret that Pakistan has a past.” Bhutto also pointed to Pakistan’s active role in financial assistance and supporting the Mujahideen during the first Afghan war. He said, “We did this with coordination and cooperation with the Western powers. Pakistan passed through waves one after the other … we suffered losses.”
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the President of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), who is part of the ruling party of Pakistan. However, Bhutto insisted that the situation has changed in recent years. He said, “It is true that this (terrorism) is an unfortunate part of our history … but we have also learned a lesson from it.” He credited internal reforms and military operations for the ‘changed situation’, especially after the assassination of his mother Benazir Bhutto, which overturned the state policy on extremist elements.
We saw terrorist attacks every other day – Bhutto
Bhutto said, “We saw terrorist attacks every other day … Pakistan has taken serious and successful action against these groups.” In an interview of Sky News last week, Asif was asked whether Pakistan has a long history of giving “support, training and funding” to terrorist organizations. He clearly admitted that it is so. But he tried to put its blame on the West.
Asif told the interviewer, “We have been doing this ‘dirty work’ for Western countries including America and Britain for nearly three decades … It was a mistake and we had to pay its price, that’s why you are saying this to me. If we did not join the war against the Soviet Union and the 9/11 war against the Soviet Union, Pakistan’s track record would have been impeccable.”
Big leaders of Pakistan obeyed to support terrorism
This is the second such time in a few days when a top leader of Pakistan has accepted the support of terrorism. This shows the increasing pressure on Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack and the nervousness arising out of India’s aggressive trend. The statements of the two leaders show that Pakistan is afraid that India should not take any major military action.
On April 22, the terrorists fired indiscriminately at people (mostly tourists) in Basaron Valley in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 26 people died and many were injured in the attack. ‘TRF’, associated with banned terrorist group ‘Lashkar-e-Taiba’, took responsibility for this attack
