A video of a police officer in uniform, with collar buttons undone, holding a glass of liquor in one hand and a cigarette in the other, may seem like a scene from a film. However, this is not a work of fiction but a stark reality in Jamui district, Bihar.
A video of this incident, depicting uniformed personnel engaging in a liquor party, has gone viral on social media. Despite a liquor ban in Bihar and stringent action against violators, such incidents continue to surface.
The video, filmed in the Jhajha block of Jamui district, shows a forester and a constable, both on duty at the Nagi-Nakati Bird Sanctuary (recently included in the Ramsar sites list), engaging in a liquor party.
The video reveals two distinct scenes: one where the forester, in uniform, holds a glass of liquor and a cigarette; and another where they are seated on the ground with a bottle of liquor and a plate of dry fruits.
The forester in the video has been identified as Anish Kumar, accompanied by constable Shiv Shankar Kumar and another individual. The video, widely circulated on social media, has caused a stir within the department. When questioned, Anish Kumar denied consuming alcohol, claiming he was only drinking a cold drink at the constable quarters.
This incident raises concerns about the role of law enforcement agencies in upholding the liquor ban. DFO Tejas Jaiswal acknowledged receiving the video and assured that an investigation team would be formed. He stated that appropriate action would be taken against the officials if found guilty.
