Big revelation regarding working hours in Dr. Shamika Ravi’s research paper

Working hours: There is a debate going on in India regarding working for 70 hours. On one hand, Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy had talked about the youth in India to work 70 hours a week, while the Chairman of L&T had given a statement of working 90 hours a week. Meanwhile, Dr. Shamika Ravi, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, released a research paper in which it has been revealed how much work people actually do in India.

He titled his analysis Time Spent on Employment-Related Activities in India, which is based on data used by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) in 2019.

How much work do Indians do?

Salaried workers in India work an average of 422 minutes every day and about 42 hours a week. While people in cities work for 469 minutes (7.8 hours), people in villages work for an average of 399 minutes (6.65 hours). Similarly, government employees work 45 minutes less every day than workers of private or public limited companies. Whereas government employees in the city work one hour more every day than government employees in the villages.

Work culture in different states

In Union Territories like Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, there is an average of more than 600 minutes of work every day, while in Goa and the North-Eastern states, there is an average of less than 360 minutes of work. On one hand, people in Delhi work for 8.3 hours, whereas in Goa, workers work only for 5.5 hours.

Difference in working between men and women

Women in cities work two hours less every day than men, while rural women are 1.8 hours behind men in this matter. Scheduled Tribes work fewer hours than other groups, while Other Backward Classes (OBCs) work about the same as the national average.

Effect of working hours on economic productivity

In Dr. Ravi’s analysis, it has been seen that a 1 percent increase in working time leads to an increase of 1.7 percent in per capita net state domestic product (NSDP). In big states, a 1 percent increase in working hours has led to an increase of 3.7 percent in NSDP.

Which state is ahead in terms of work

At present, the maximum number of people in Gujarat, 7.21 percent, work more than 70 hours a week, whereas in Bihar this ratio is only 1.05 percent.
