The country’s top hospital and Medical Research Institute AIIMS Delhi (AIIMS Delhi) is currently struggling with a huge shortage of staff. Recently, in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application, it has been shocked that more than one -third of the faculty posts in AIIMS have been lying vacant for a long time.
According to reports, this information has been revealed through RTI filed by social activist MM Shuja in January 2025. On this, AIIMS administration replied on 18 March 2025, saying that out of 1,235 sanctioned faculty posts in the institute, 430 posts are currently vacant. That is, about 35% of the posts are vacant, which can not only affect the treatment of patients. Rather, they also raise serious questions on the quality of medical education.
Appointments have been incomplete over years
RTI has also revealed that in 2019, the posts of 172 Assistant Professors were advertised, but only 110 appointments were made. In 2021 and 2022, applications were also sought for 270 posts, but only 173 assistant professors and only 3 associate professors were appointed.
The most surprising thing is that in the first quarter of 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2025, there has been no new recruitment on regular faculty posts. It is clear that for the past several years, the pace of permanent appointments in AIIMS has been very slow.

Delhi’s health services are also affected
This crisis is not limited to AIIMS only. Another RTI recently released has revealed that 17% of medical officers, 38% of non-teaching specialists and 22% of Teaching Specialist are vacant in Delhi government hospitals.
Experts believe that this crisis is affecting the country’s government health system. Both institutes like AIIMS have great responsibility for both treatment and education, in such a situation, it is worrying to remain vacant on such a large scale.
